How to Buy Shoes That are Good for the Feet
Posted by Designer Shoe Editor in How to Buy Shoes, Shoe Buying Tips
If you expect that buying shoes that are good for the foot requires stocking a wardrobe filled with orthopedic shoes and Birkenstocks, think again.
While the foot is used primarily for walking, standing, running and jumping, incorrect footgear will do harm to your body and posture.
To prevent potential foot woes and back pain, you must purchase shoes that are in alignment with the 28 bones and 20 muscles in your foot.
Arm yourself with helpful tips to dress your feet in various types of fashionable shoes; and you can buy footwear without making your tootsies sore, or wearing styles that are devoid of fashion.
Have a salesperson measure your feet.
The size of your foot may change due to weight gain or weight loss between your last shoe-shopping excursions. Since the differences in a half-size are only one-sixth of an inch, a change in the length of your foot requires a larger shoe. Measure your foot once while standing, and again while you are sitting.
Choose leather and pliable materials.
Medical professionals and construction workers wear shoes that contain rigid materials for safety and support. Leather and suede materials for the shoe’s upper allow the shoe to conform to the shape of the foot.
Whatever the material, the soles must be thick enough to resist the impact, when the shoe hits the ground or a hard object.
Check the fit.
A new shoe should fit snugly at the instep and heel. Allow sufficient room at the front for extension of the toes. Too tight shoes may cause calluses, bunions and other foot deformities.
Increase the size of your shoes and socks.
Socks and other forms of hosiery absorb moisture from the feet and protect them against irritation caused by the foot rubbing against the shoe during walking.
Wearing shoes a quarter-inch wider and stockings or socks half an inch longer than the foot, allows enough wiggle room in your shoes for your toes.
Select high heels carefully.
According to Foot Care Direct, “High heels are fun and look good, but they should not be worn too long at a stretch or for much walking. High heels also cramp the toes and change body posture considerably.
Choose high heels with various heel heights—flat, medium and high. Rotate these various heel heights weekly to allow the muscles of the calf to stay limber.
The most comfortable shoes for your feet will have a thick, hard sole made of rubber or leather, sturdy external fastenings to hold it securely to the foot, and thick heels less than two inches high.
